Cancer Awareness Programme is the Need of the Hour

Cancer is posing a very serious threat to human life, if we fail to prevent or control the rapid growth of cancer cases in the region, cancer will become the killer No.1 and may lead to an epidemic like situation by next 20-25 years. But how to prevent in absence of anti cancer vaccine? According to experts, by raising the level of cancer awareness of people, about 60% cancer cases can be prevented. Today, about 80% people, diagnosed with cancer, come too late for treatment, mainly due to lack of awareness, knowledge and information.

In response to this need Cancer Care India, the national network of cancer support groups, was formed in 2002 and the ‘Nationwide Cancer Awareness Programme (CAP) was launched jointly by Cancer Care India (CACI) and the National Cadet Corp (NCC) on 26th May 2003. CAP has gained momentum and started producing the desired results. As on 12.10.2014, conducted 138 major CAPs in 27 states/ Union Territories, and 57,761 people including 44,565 NCC cadets, 500 BSF personnel and 12,696 others attended our workshop on cancer awareness. Cancer experts, including Magasayzay awardee Padmabhusan Prof (Dr) V Shanta and Dr S H Advani, said “CAP is the need of the hour’. In addition to conducting of CAPs, all our 27 member groups, do provide information, emotional and psychological support to cancer patients and their family member. A few groups also provide financial support to needy cancer patients for treatment.
